Definition of Modality

What does modality mean? I've stumbled across the term many times, thinking it was synonymous with method. But then I came across a forensic book.

"the tables above indicate how many single and multiple modalities have so far yielded identifications" (See picture for tables)

Now I am confused with this term modality
