HI there. I am a forensic DNA analyst and I am sometimes considered an "evidence custodian " when I am on the stand as an expert witness in court. I have possession of the evidence I am testing and am responsible for the chain of custody that goes with it from the time I recieve it untill it is with another custodian.

There area lots of people that can have access to it and be the custodian, including the CSI tech that collected it, or the Medical Examiner during the autopsy, to me the analyst, to the investigator and the attorney for court presentations. It depends who takes responsibility for the evidence at the time.
