Did the police come up with a motive (money, insanity, drugs)? Did the girl have any enemies or people who may not want her alive? Also, did they check the call logs on both phones to see if the guy's story is straight?

Dried semen stains (like on sheets) will last indefinitely. There have been a few published studies on the deterioration of sperm in the vagina. After 24 hours there will be a significant number of sperm that have lost their tails. My own casework experience is that intact sperm will be found several days after intercourse.
If the victim was strangled with a ligature the DNA under her nails may turn out to be her own.
