To answer your question, blood typing is mostly outdated and not used much anymore except in clinical ( hospital ) settings. The only time I am asked to do ABO typing is when I am comparing new evidence or suspects to an old case with only ABO done at the time and no evidence remaining to do DNA testing.

DNA testing is so much more individualized, and can distinguish far greater (say one in 10 quadrillion verses 1 in 2) than ABO typing that makes old blood typing techniques obsolete.
