I have done this and had very good icroscopy specimen. I just held the hair sample in forceps in an upright position as I filled the casette with parafin wax for embedding.

The hair sample should extend above the parrafin so you can hold it in place while the wax solidfies on the cold plate. It was then microtomed at 3 microns and stained.
