Processing A Possible Murder Weapon

For my last assignment I have to explain in detail how I would process a hammer as a possible murder weapon and I just want to clarify something. When I have photographed it, do I pick it up and bag it ready for transportation to the lab or do I process it at the scene?
(i.e dust for finger prints and swab for traces of blood?)
Thanks any help appreciated.
